Forward planning and good communication were key and after being transported to our Swansea workshop, the valve was stripped and inspected.
The butterfly valve, which plays a critical role in controlling the cooling waters that prevent boiling within a nuclear reactor, was then completely overhauled to restore it to OEM standards and prepare it for another long service period.
Our client was delighted by the quality and speed of IVS’s work.
The process
IVS’s process was fully documented with all work, testing and inspection carried out to meet OEM specifications and according to quality processes.
- The body - after being shotblasted, non-destructive (NDT) tests showed that weld repairs were required on the lifting lugs. These were completed, leading to a 100% acceptable test result.
- Body edges were filled with internal and external epoxy coatings applied.
- The blade was shotblasted back to bare metal and new coatings applied.
- Worn trunnion bearings were replaced as were all O-rings, fasteners and the D-section seal.
- Drive and non-drive shafts – all holes were cleaned, re-drilled and tapped (where required) and reused.
- Shear pins were in poor condition and renewed.
